Hey everybody,

I just recently purchased a 2001 gz250, in hunter green colour. Its in relatively good shape. And pretty much stock other than a few accessories like saddlebags and windscreen.
A few issues Id like to start tackling in the near future are:
-surface rust on the chrome (rims, handlebars, etc)
-the speedometer backlight doesnt work (yet the blue highbeam indicator light stays on permanently)
-minor oil leak from valve cover gasket
-minor dent on tank

Ive been doing some reading on this forum, and it looks like the first mod im going to do is switching the front sprocket to a 16t from 15.

If anyone has any advice/tips on what I could do with the speedo, or how to take off the surface rust on the chrome, that would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks so much. I love the look of this bike, so im super stoked to put some serious elbow grease into it. Looking forward to getting to know the people here on this forum in the coming months and years.

For some of the surface rust, I have had some success with a product called
Never-Dull. It is made by the George Basch Co. Inc. out of Freeport, NY USA.

Welcome to the forum. I use Marvel Mystery oil to clean the rims, handelbars, headlight, etc. I wet down a soft rag and wipe down which ever part needing cleaned. I let it set for 15 to 20 minutes and then rub it off. Gets rid of rust and grime. Shines the parts up nice. Speedo backlight easy to change. For high beam, use electric contact cleaner inside switch. This needs to be done on all the switches on the handlebars. Spray cleaner, work switches back and forth a few times. This procedure works well. Enjoy the GZ and the forum.

We no longer have a GZ but it is still a wonderful memory. It was Lynda's fitst bike and a perfect fit for her. She developed her riding skills and confidence with it. After 3 seasons she moved up to a Suzuki M-50 and credits the GZ with her ability to move up to a larger and heavier bike with little trouble and no drops.
