If it has 2"-3" of play, I don't think I'd be wanting to ride until it was set to spec. There's a real danger of it jumping the sprocket & jamming up.

My chain is set all the way to back wheel, cant go further. I have about 1" 1/4 slack and it bounces and hits the bike when riding. I think i need a new one it may be to stretched out.
