Average MPG.....?

I recently picked up a 2001 GZ250, and am having trouble finding any authoritative info on the mpg rating for the bike. I see that the new ones (2009) are rated at 82 mpg - do the older ones have a similar mpg rating?

If anyone has any personal experience or figures they would like to post, I would appreciate it. Of course, I plan on figuring out my personal mileage by doing the whole fill the tank, reset the trip odometer, compare miles to fuel used thing - I was just wondering what other people are getting so I have an idea of about where I can expect to be.

Thanks all....

AZ Kev

Re: Average MPG.....?

I average between 60 & 70 M.P.G. depending on riding conditions.

Yes, I seem to get around 64 mpg. I could be wrong, but 82 mpg seems way high. My GZ's 3 years old, but I don't think there's any alterations to the 2009 model which would account for the 30% higher figures, but, it is probably the way the manufacturers test their vehicles so that they can juggle figures, & make it sound better than it is, to encourage sales.

Re: Average MPG.....?

Thanks guys - that's about what I was thinking I would get, between 60 and 70mpg. And yes, I'm sure the manufacturer's have their own "methods" to ensure the highest possible rating, realistic or not.

Here is the page on the Suzuki site, and you can see at the bottom of the picture, the 82mpg image :

But hey - after pulling 14mpg in my truck, I will take 65mpg all day long!

Re: Average MPG.....?

82mpg is posted for every years model. i saw that sticker in the show room every year on GZs. i think no one gets such a high mpg. only if you ride on side roads and never go above 55mph and the valve clearence is excellent a higher mpg is possible but not beyond 70mpg on regular basis.

Re: Average MPG.....?

Gas milage is a crap shoot at best. Suzuki says my Vstrom will do 66 per U.S. gallon. Not my bike, no way. It is never ridden under "ideal" conditions with a fly weight rider wearing extremely slippery riding gear.

Re: Average MPG.....?

I calculate mpg at almost every fill-up, and it's between 68 and 74 mpg, below 70 in the winter when it needs longer to warm up, has some maintenance, and isn't used much, and usually over 70 when it does nothing but riding, mixed back roads(mostly)/city(some). Average is likely around 72 mpg.

Suzuki used to say that it will give you 95 mpg, at a constant speed of 37 mph.

Oh my, 37 mph under ideal factory conditions sounds as exciting as watching hair grow. Boring.

Re: Average MPG.....?

Atm I'm riding around with no choke cable (waiting for new one to arrive) as it wouldn't move so as a result the choke was always on. before this happened i would get around 61 mpg, however after removal i now get 83 mpg! I didn't realize how much of a difference the choke being slightly on would make!

I ride a GZ 125 btw.

Keep riding, eventually you will save enough to pay for the new cable. Awesome mileage by the way.
