almost 20,000 miles on 06 GZ250. bike runs great. do the routine maintenance on the outside and oil and filter change on time. But never had the valves adjusted or even checked and nothing else inside the engine. Now I am taking it to the dealership to get the valves adjusted and some other fine tuning.

Question is, if nothing is wrong with valves they will clean and adjust. IF something is wrong, are they going to put new valves and what else they would? in this case is it going to be expensive?

Do you feel like there will be something wrong? They should check and adjust the valves to specs. If it's not showing signs of problems, then they probably won't replace anything. If they say you need that, then I'd be raising an eyebrow.

Did you put those 20k miles on it yourself? That's some decent mileage for an '06 GZ.

If the bike is running GOOD.
No need for them to do anything but adjust the valves.
Their will be no cleaning of the valves as the adjustment is at the valve stem, not the valve head.

The only time that I would adjust the valves is when the bike becomes hard to start.

Exactly what "other fine tuning" ??

Except for changing the spark plug and running a little cleaner through with the gas, there isn't any "other fine tuning" to be done.

If the dealer is telling you they will "clean the valves" or clean the carbon out.........they are scamming you. :skull:

P.S. If you are happy with the way it is running, tell them NOT to screw with the idle speed either. If that is adjusted when the bike is not THOROUGHLY warmed up (hot), it can be a real bitch to get it right again.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't feel any trouble in the running or starting. It is running so smooth that I personally do not want to take it to the shop as I do not want them to open the thing and mess up the factory fitting/settings. Luckily the shop where I go is a good place, the manager is a nice and straight person. He just told me that Suzuki recommends otherwise its my choice. From "fine tuning" I meant that if they can clean carb or carbon inside the head as I do not touch even the carb myself. No proper place to do all this work otherwise I can manage.

Actually just in the past few months I was getting less milage per gallon so I was wondering if valves are the reason or some other "fine tuning" as I mentioned.

Personally I do add the gas additive and often buy the expensive Suzuki brand. Clean the spark plug. I also hook up the battery to the battery tender more so in winter and occassionally in summer and it helps.

Sounds like you have a good handle on things.....including not messing with things that are working OK......and that includes NOT cleaning the carb (beyond the in-tank stuff you are already using) and NOT doing anything to remove carbon from the heads. Even if you do get some out, it will be right back after riding 100 miles or so. Complete waste of time and money.
