Nice bike but engine is toast.

Folks,

I have a 2005 GZ250 that looks great but the engine is gone. All advice from all mechanics is the fix is more expensive than the bike. What to do? I'm looking on Ebay and there is 2001 engine on sale. Will a 2001 engine fit a 2005 bike? Do all years fit all models? Anyone have some creative solutions.

Yes, all models/years are the same, engine wise. In 2004 or so they changed the shape of the combustion chamber a bit, that's all as far as I know.

Creative solutions: turn it into an electric bike. May be able to keep parts of the old engine, and build the electric motor in it, or something. Just an idea.

Buy the engine on ebay and do a swap.

Engine swap will certainly be the easiest and cheapest of your options. However, don't just throw money at an Ebay motor without ensuring that it's good. Or, if you have to buy it, get some insurance and something in writing stating that it runs. Anything to cover you from getting screwed.

Buy from a reputable, volume seller. Their reputation is worth a lot more to them than they could ever make off of a Suzuki engine.

The GN250 engine is also compatible in most cases. I believe the two engines are the same.

Just curious, why do you say the engine is toast?

Re: Nice bike but engine is toast.

I have a 2007 and unfortunately was suckered by someone who mentioned "minor electrical problems" Turned out the exhaust valve stem broke off into cylinder and I didn't hear it jingling around because the piston jammed it back into the head :S

I need at minimum a new head ( complete), gasket kit, cylinder ( unless I can get it bored - cause its cast - and find a larger piston/ring kit)

Otherwise, a good used engine will work for me...

Anyone have a link to find these parts? I found the older GN250 engine out here http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product ... 42720.html

GM 250 looks the same but I am not sure if it is.. If I could find the GZ 250 parts locally I would buy them.. Of course there are a few engines out there on eBay too.. Buying the head complete and cylinder with piston and gasket would almost be as easy ( and cheaper about 600) ..
