Absolutely add an inline fuel filter. They will save a lot of fine crud from entering the carb. You can find a small filter at many auto supplie stores, small engine repair shops and bike/recreation shops.

I fly an ultralight with a paraglider above me and used that same filter. Remember to change it once per year as the filter went bad over time and made hard starts. Good filter though.

I added the fuel filter but used Tygon line like we do on Ultralights.

Make sure you get a filter intended for use in a gravity feed system. You can get a filter that looks the same from a big box store but it is intended for use with a fuel pump and will not flow well in a gravity system. It may not be as much of an issue with our 250's but bigger bikes can actually run out of gas when the level int e tank gets low and the fuel head is reduced.

So, is there no screen in the petcock, or in the carb inlet?

Screen, but it doesn't filter down to the same level as these additional filters. The carb is the weak spot, so do what you can to keep it clean.
