clutch cable... oil?

My neighbor looked over my bike and gave me a couple maintenance suggestions. One was to lube the clutch cable. I haven't seen anything that specifies WHAT to lube it with. Probably a simple answer, but I'd rather not screw up my clutch the first week I have it!

I like bicycle cable lube for thin wires. Anything will work really. But WD40 isn't what you want.

Re: clutch cable... oil?

I take the top end of the cable out of the handlebar, drip some heavy gear oil at the top of the inside cable, and have gravity do the rest. Others use sewing machine oil, regular motor oil, trombone oil, etc.

PS I think the manual says to use regular motor oil to lube the cables.

Re: clutch cable... oil?

I did just find the oil and grease page in the manual. It does say motor oil. Weird! Well, to me anyway. I'm about to give it an oil change, so I'll just drip some oil down there while I'm at it.

Thanks for the replies.
