Greetings from south western Pa
just picked up a 2000 GZ250 Looks like a great site. bike has got 3K on it and been sitting for a while, i'll be searching for an idea of what to go over before i start putting the miles on it.

Welcome Monte. Glad to have another new member join us. Your bike is a little long in the tooth but likely not worn out in the least.
Due to age you will need to service or replace a number of items to be safe. If original the tires and tubes should be replaced. Rubber gets hard and slippery with age. Brake fluid flush for the front brake. Likely a valve adjust to be sure of clearances. New plug, oil, oil filter. Check the air filter too. It must be removed and inspected from the inside. Reason for removal is the airflow is from the inside to the outside. Go over all the nuts and bolts, fittings with your tools. Some may be loose. Battery is a no brainer, replace it. Go over all switch gear with contact cleaner and make sure everything works properly with a decent power supply. This includes the side stand switch and brake light switches(front and rear). Lube the cables. Throttle cables, clutch cable, speedo cable and speedo drive in front hub when you have the wheel off. That will keep you busy for a while and you will learn a lot about the bike while doing it. If you are unfamiliar with tools and such this is a great learning experience. 3 things I leave to professionals are valve adjusting, replacing tires and tubes,(I take the wheels in to a shop) and brake fluid work. Everything else is just TLC that keeps your GZ happy and healthy. Oh yeah, you will have carb problems. I'll leave that up to the carb specialists here to help you. |

adjusted valves today. alot easier than my 84 XL350r. fresh gas. new plug oil and filter change. 60 degrees today. took out the shadow but looking forward to the GZ. battery arrives tomorrow, time to cruise.

Bike started as soon as i tried it, no strange engine noise and the idle was perfect. still have a few things to check out, i took a chance for $200 looks like it was worth it.
