How important is the SAE rating of engine oil?

I've just done my first oil change on my bike since I bought it (second hand) and my local automotive shop didn't have any 'SAE 10W-40' engine oil as suggested by the manual. I did get some 4T (4stroke) motorbike oil 10W-40 but couldn't find SAE rating anywhere.

How important is this SAE standard?

Re: How important is the SAE rating of engine oil?

Did you put in a motorcycle-specific oil, not marked as "energy conserving" or with "friction modifiers". If you put in regular automotive oil, your clutch will be slipping. There has to be a weight indicated somewhere on one of the labels on the jug. What is the temperature range where you are? A 20-50 wt oil would probably still be OK for you, unless it's really cool or cold and that may make it a little hard to turn over and start in the morning.

Sounds like you have the right oil.
