It'd be funny if it weren't true

For the ten years or so before I came to Tenerife, my job was installing intruder alarms, fire alarms, closed circuit television systems, and door entry systems. The company had some big contracts, so we were on site for many weeks or months. Our usual procedure was to arrive on site in the morning, work for an hour or so, then go off to the nearest cafe for breakfast. One time, we were working in Nottingham, a large city in the north of England. First day on site, we set off and found a likely looking cafe, looked at the menu, and ordered a full English breakfast. This consisted of sausages, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, beans, mushrooms, bread & butter, tea. All this for £3. No problem with the breakfast, except that the sausages were disgusting. Really horrible. Thought that it was probably just bad sausages that day. Following day, same thing, disgusting sausages. Come wednesday, decided I didn't want sausages, so the conversation went something like this :-

waitress "Good morning Sir, what can I get you?"

me "I'd like bacon, eggs, tomatoes, beans and mushrooms please"

waitress "Bread & butter, tea?"

me "Yes please"

waitress "That'll be £4, please, Sir"

me "Hang on a minute, I had the same order yesterdal, PLUS sausages. How come it's an extra £1 for less food?"

waitress "Well Sir, the breakfast is a special. If you order the items separately, I have to charge you for each item, and it comes to £4.

me "In that case , can I change my order?"

waitress "Of course Sir"

me "I'd like a breakfast"

waitress "Very good, sir"

me "But no sausages"

waitress "Right, that's one breakfast, no sausages. That'll be £3 Sir"

Sometimes it is just easier ordering the special and not eating what you don't really want. Hopefully the dog in the back alley will get a breakfast too.

Disgusting sausages; I didn't think there was such a thing.

I remember that they tasted so vile that I couldn't eat them. Probably the one & only time.
