Hi from Utah. First timer....

Hi guys,

I am a first time motorcycle owner and rider. I learned the basics of riding when i was 16 but never did anything until last year.
With gas prices going up and with me looking for new things to do I wanted to get a motorcycle.
After weeks of reading I chose the GZ.

Anyway, I am glad to be here and hope to make friends in the riding society.
I am also a member of multiple other forums that cover my interests: Nissan, BMW, Audi, XD pistols, other guns, computer hardware etc.

Re: Hi from Utah. First timer....

I am planning to get good gear and I was going to start asking about this here. Also the safety course. I have already checked on this with the DMV here.

I have been reading here about some maintenance as I think the bike will need it but I can't seem to find good answers to some questions I have.
Where do I get good quality not too expansive parts online? What kind of break pads and shoes should I get? Air filter, oil filter? What about the chain? the bike has a little less than 5k miles

Also, I read that after 2004 they changed something in the air intake so the bike gets better mileage. Mine is 2003 so i guess its the older type. Can I put the newer parts on for better mpg?

thanks!

Re: Hi from Utah. First timer....

In 04 they changed the design of the combustion chamber, for better mileage. But it wasn't that significant. The chain should still be in good shape,a good cleaning with kerosene & a good chain lube.A good choice for air and oil filters at about a 1/3 of the cost of OEM are:
Hiflo-Filtro HFA-3503 air
HF-136 oil

Welcome to the forum from South Carolina. I highly recommend the MSF BRC (Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course) for a beginner. It will help you develop good habits and break any bad habits you have. Ride safe.
