New toy for my toy

I mentioned this somewhere else but I got my sissybar/ cargo rack today that I found on ebay. It suprised me that I got it as cheap as I did, it was a brand new Suzuki brand chromed rack, the one that goes for $330 on the suzuki site and it was still in the plastic and the bolts/hardware was still sealed in plastic as well and the backrest had never been bolted on. The box the seller shipped it in was the original Suzuki box that came from Japan and had the factory stickers and labels with all kinds of Japanese writing on them. Its pretty sturdy made and weighs alot for what it is. It was a pain to get on and was only able to get 3 of the spacers on so itll have to do. It came with the chromed rack,backrest, the padded part i had to install, new longer bolts, spacers, washers, cap nuts for the padded piece too and even the original factory instructons. Total I paid for it on Ebay was $162.74 and that includes shipping so I'm pretty happy with it! :2tup:

I guess we all failed to mention that the installation is easier if you jack up the back of the bike to raise the fender farther away from the tire. Sorry.

The good news is that now you know how it works and have practice doing it.........because the bag supports mount to those SAME BOLTS (IIRC they replace the spacers) !! (Did I say that was good news or bad ????)

I'm learning and having fun doing it. I might put saddlebags on it if i can find them and supports and get a deal on them sometime but its not a hurry. I'm thinking I'll take the backpack I store my gear in and put it on the back then take the tightening straps loose from the padded straps then cross them over the backrest and make an X with them and wrap the other straps around the bottom of the backrest support and hook both back together and tighten them up and see how it does.

Make SURE that all of your loose ends are secured tightly.

Really NASTY things can happen if a strap meets the chain and rear sprocket. :skull:

At least one bunje cord attaching the whole thing to the bracket is really good.

I like the little rack but I'd have no use for the backrest, and even though I'm not exactly Mr. Price Sensitive, $330 seemed like an awful lot for a rack. I've seen a number of people have put together combo backrest/trunks on here, and some of them looked good, but it seemed to either be with parts they made, ones I couldn't find anymore, or, ones that cost too much to be worth putting on what is probably now a $1500-$1800 bike. Glad you were able to shave $100 off the going price.

It is Capitolism, alive and well. Supply and demand (when there is only one supplier, you can demand whatever price you want).......added to the fact that bike "nuts" really aren't that cost conscious when it comes to "bling". They will spend a dollar to save a nickel on a quart of oil just so they can blow it on overpriced chrome. :roll:

A friend of mine has started making a few small parts for the M-50s. Riders are flocking to him like dogs on a squirrel. His profit margin is.........not small.
