Speedometer Cable???
My bike is on the road!!! but my speedo isnt working. I found the speedo cable under my seat!!! Here is what the end looks like that goes into the part on the wheel

You need a new cable,it looks like broken piece is still in front wheel.

Oh ya, that cable is in a world of hurt. You do need a new one. While you are at it you might want to pull the front wheel(practice makes perfect)and lube the moving parts in there that are part of the speedo drive mechanism. Be very observant as to where things fit and all will go well. A camera is handy just case you need a refresher. I like to take pics before pulling anything apart although that does not assure me of success every time. I need younger eyes and better lighting.

Mine sheared at around 9000 miles (around 1" from the wheel) It's really simple to fit a new one, but check inside the housing for broken bits, because it looks like the school you bought it off weren't unduly bothered about the condition/safety of the bikes. My cable cost €24 (around $36), but I don't know if the price is the same in America.
