Hi,

I bought a 2002 last week. After getting it home I realized the horn didn't work. I tried my horn on another bike and it didn't work so I figure I have a bad horn, but...I also tried their horn on my bike and it still didn't work. There is power going to the horn but I think I may have a bad ground or something.

Anyone know of any electrical/horn issues with these bikes?

NO.

How do you KNOW there is power going to the horn?

If you have a meter and you measure 12V between the wires going to the horn when the button is pushed and the horn is still connected, then the horn is bad.

You can further prove this by connecting the horn to a high-capacity battery charger.....4 amps or more. No beep, bad horn.

Hi,

I have a meter and there is a power going to the horn...also connected the horn to a battery and it didn't work. So I know I have a bad horn, I'm just curious why another horn (from a suzuki katana...12V horn) didn't work when I plugged it in. Is there a difference in these horns I may not know about it?

They probably are polarity sensitive. Other than that, a horn is a horn and 12V DC is.......

There is ALWAYS going power to the horn. The horn switch just connects the horn to ground.

Flattened out electric circuit:

battery+12V------fuse-------horn--------switch--------battery0V/ground.

At the horn, the wire on the right (when sitting on the saddle) is the wire from the battery.

Edit/PS: AFAIK there are no known or regular horn issues with this bike.

I have a new horn and front brake pads on order...tinkering to begin when they arrive.

have you tried tapping the horn with a hammer. There is a plate inside that vibrates due to an electromagnetic coil. They can get stuck. A guy at work has a chief and his horn wasn't working I checked read 12V when he was pushing the horn button . I read continuity across the contacts of the horn( wires disconnected!) and it was not open. I plugged it back up and wacked it with a screwdriver handle while he was pushing the button about the third wack it freed up and beep beep. However when you say that another horn doesn't work and your reading the 12V you probably dropped your ground somewhere.

Its the number one rule to keep your ass of the ground.
