Hello everyone,

My name is Scott. I have a gz250 which didn't survive its first season. My son was careful about getting his new bike maintained on schedule but trusted the dealer to complete the maintenance at the 6000 km service. It's a testimonial to the bike that he put on 1000 km with no oil in the crankcase before it sounded "weird". We put oil in it of course but it self-destructed the next day.

So, I have an engineless gz250 (2006 model) in need of an engine or someone who'd like a nearly perfect body to put their old engine into.

nailed!!!!!!! they make a mistake, that mistake broke your bike. how this should work is, they give you a new engine free of charge and install the new engine free of charge and your money back for the service. if not you call a lawyer that will nail their balls to every thing and any thing..

i want you to call that place right now. do not be nice, do not be polite and say.... i had service preformed on my bike, due to your mechanic incompetence my engine is ruined, how do you plan on resolving this issue. i want answers now. if they give you trouble you tell them you are going to take what ever steps necessary to get this issue resolved and i assure you it will be resolved, one way or a another. so i suggest you fix this problem now before any further action is taken.

There is a matter of principle here but there is also a matter of practicallity.

He rode 1000km (about 600 miles ??) before he noticed anything amiss.
If their assumption is correct that the dealer didn't put any oil in it, then that also means that the rider didn't check it during that 600 miles.

I know the GZ has a solid engine but I HIGHLY doubt that it would run 600 miles with NO oil. That leaves the possibility that it was NOT the dealer's fault and that the oil they put in leaked out.

Anyhow, the bottom like is: At this point, it will be virtually impossible to prove that the dealer was at fault. Contact them and have one shot at it? Sure. Make a big deal out of it ?? Nope, not from where I sit. Better to accept partial responsibility and move on.

I agree with Easy on this one.

I do not believe the GZ will run 600 miles with no oil.

These motorcycles are not automobiles, they do require a pre-ride check.

Tires ,oil and gas should always be part of that check list.

I don't think the dealer is at fault. How often was the oil checked during the time after the dealer service ? The onus is on the rider/operator to do a pre-ride check. This is an expensive lesson but life in general is a lesson. Hopefully you can pick up a new/used engine and get back on the road.

I think I've started a tempest here!

Firstly, let me tell you that my son, being sixteen at the time, was big on riding and low on checking boring stuff like oil. He's wiser now. So am I. I should have been more vigilant, too.

That being said, the bike never smoked nor leaked. So tell me, where did the full crankcase of oil go?

It is pure supposition on my part that the oil was not replaced at that first oil "change" but with no evidence of oil being consumed (smoke or leak) what should one believe? I am not prepared to slam the dealer given that the bike did go those 600 miles after the service. However, I was offended that they outright refused to accept the possibility of a mistake on their part.

I was also saddened to find that Suzuki had no replacement engines available as the bike is considered simply a "learner's bike" and disposable compared to other machines. That didn't sit well at all.

Son made mistake, Dad made mistake, Dealer claimed no possibility of error and manufacturer figures it's a disposable bike. Seems to me that there isn't a lot going right here!

Back to the original question. Does anyone have an engine on a broken bike for sale? Or would anyone like a project bike?

check on here under the for sale threads, check ebay, check craigs list.

600 miles is quite a long distance to run with no oil in the bike. i guess i misunderstood that part.. but 600 miles should not be long enough for all the oil to disappear unless there was a leak.

i cant check my oil on my bike unless i have some one else look at it. i have the window just like the gz does only it's setting right under that big bubbled out chrome cover, when i am on the bike there is no possible way i can see that window, when the bike is on the kick stand it leans over way to far to get a good reading, i guess that is one complaint i have about my bike. i need to get a mirror on a stick i guess.

Excellent point about the window. It was a friend who pointed out that the complaint about noise may have something to do with no oil in the window. When it was topped up, it took the full capacity of the oil reservoir to fill it to the window's full level.

That's about when we know we were in trouble!
