Rode With Disc brake lock on: Speedo does not work: Advice ?
My girlfriend decided to take the bike (1999) herself :poke2: and , tried to start with the lock on the front disc brake, but realised soon and turned it off
this resulted in the speedo not working. I have noticed that the speedo cable that goes in on the hub looks a bit misplaced, But the bike is fine in all other aspects on the front wheel could anyone please advice on what could have happened and what is the worst case scenario. I did that once. Luckily I was only gently accelerating out of my garage. The lock hit the brake caliper first, & I realised what I'd done. The only damage was to the lock, which sprung open. So much for brake locks!
In your case it does appear that it's caused a problem with the speedo cable. It can't hurt to unfasten the cable from the wheel & check for damage. You may be able to reattach it, or you may need a new cable - but you won't know until you have a look.

I did exactly the same thing. You need to replace the cable, at least. Check to make sure that where it connects to the wheel isn't bent. If it's still okay, it's just a $15 mistake, one that I know I'll never do again! Good luck!

Re: Rode With Disc brake lock on: Speedo does not work: Advice ?
If you look at the Speedo Drive (the part at the hub that the cable goes into), I'm fairly sure there is a metal "finger" that protrudes from it and goes into a groove in the hub to drive the speedo cable. That "finger" was either bent or broken off when contacted by the rotor lock. Either way, you'll need to remove the front wheel and disconnect the speedo cable to inspect the Speedo Drive. Unless the cable was torn from the sheath, it's probably the drive assembly, not the cable. The drive is item #7 in the fiche shown here: Front Wheel
These type of things qualify as an authentic Whoop-shit. ![]()

Thanks alantf, willowolf Sarris for the replies:
Upon ur advice and further inspection I found that the point where the cable connects the hub drive was ''bent'' not broken. So i slid it back but it did not work upon checking. the speedo , milometer and the tripmeter dont function. Hi Sarris, does it mean that the drive assembly was damaged ??if so how much does it cost ,. Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Bikebandit has it for just over $70 US. It's probably comparable over there.

Bent is not good. However, you will need to remove the wheel to be sure the drive finger is properly in the hub slot.
The drive itself is a very simple device, so take it off and look at it before you buy another one. I'm fairly sure you CAN"T get the drive finger back into the slot on the hub without removing the wheel. ![]()
