Key doesn't work on battery cover.

I bought a used GZ250, love it, it has a few issues, mostly cosmetic. I am wondering if purchasing this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... =p3907.m32

would be worth the trouble . I CAN get to the battery from the other side (I was told. Still haven't figured that out).

I am not mechanically inclined .

Does the key work for the gas cap?

I don't understand the problem... It says that it comes with the ignition, gas cap and seat lock, which are all that the key is needed for, right?

Re: Key doesn't work on battery cover.

Sorry . I guess I wasn't clear. O.K. I bought and have been riding a 2001 gz 250. I have a key for it. It works for both the ignition and the gas cap, but for whatever reason, it won't open the left cover where the battery is. In terms of my bike's performance, this problem has no effect but it is inconvenient & what if I would want to sell it some day?

So what I'm wondering is.... is that a BIG deal? Should I be thinking about changing out everything with an "ignition set" such as the one posted on Ebay?

Perhaps someone has an easier fix..... or someone has had the same exact problem with their GZ and can explain what I need to do to get the battery box to open....

Re: Key doesn't work on battery cover.

The "lock" on the left side is not for the "battery cover", it is for unlocking the saddle. When you insert the key and turn it clockwise about 90° (a quarter turn or so), the latch under the saddle will release. You will not hear a click, but you will be able to lift the saddle.

Remove the saddle by lifting its back side a bit and then pulling the saddle to the rear. Then, you can unscrew the left cover (for the air filter and the right cover (for the battery). They have regular screws.

For the left side (air filter cover): after you remove the screw (top right of the cover, when looking at it) pull at the top left side until the plastic "anchor' pops out of its rubber ring , but do NOT pull it far away from the frame; then, you can remove the cover by lifting it up, to release it from the vertical peg, at the bottom. The cover will hang happily from the cable (between the saddle latch and the lock).

For the right side (battery cover): after you remove the screw (top left of the cover, when looking at it) pull at the top right side, and the bottom, both corners of the triangle will pop out.

PS underneath the saddle you will find the toolset (I hope) which has screwdrivers in it, use the big phillips head (the "+" shaped screwdriver point).

Re: Key doesn't work on battery cover.

Woo hoo! Thanks! Everything is there, the cable that disconnects the seat is simply loose from the key apparatus. Should be an easy fix. Thanks.

One question, though, it sure doesn't seem like much is holding my seat on. How much of that catch that attaches to the seat or connects it should be rotated or in use? From what I can see there is only a half inch or so. Is that normal or is some of my connection retracted?

When the seat is attached, there is a little "play in it" .

Re: Key doesn't work on battery cover.

Great, no ebay puchase needed (nor a lot of work, putting a new ignition lock in...) !

Well as long as the saddle gives a good "click" when put back onto the bike, you can be quite sure it is properly latched.

Re: "play in the saddle" in your other post, my 2005 has a little play especially up front, and I'm not worried about it.
