Best way to install an Ele.accessory plug on the GZ?

Has anyone done it? Is there a "best way" to do it? (Keeping the plug out of the way yet easy to use with handlebar mounted accessories like a small GPS.)

I checked the "How to section" but saw nothing. Just looking for possible better ideas before I use one of my "no brainer, simplest, easiest, lazy man's methods.

You really have to be careful of the draw on the electrical system. The GZ is pretty tight as it is, and you could easily find yourself stranded with a dead battery if you don't constantly keep an eye on it.

The best way would be to wire it into the horn relay, but you have to be careful of location and keeping it fairly dry.

Yea I know there is not much wiggle room electrically. But the GPS I use wouldn't pull much.

Like I said, keeping it dry would be the most important thing. I would wire it into the horn (hot when key is on) and probably mount it in the seat box. Then when I plugged the GPS in, the cord could just tuck under the front of the seat.

That might not be such a good idea. When the horn is activated, there are HUGE spikes of noise on the line that feeds it. The battery tends to filter most of that out but the line that actually goes to the horn doesn't benefit from that filtering much.

They do sell 'all weather' power outlets that would work great.

Thanks Dupo, I do already have an all weather outlet I picked up at Fry's. It is getting a little long in the tooth though so maybe I should replace it....not sure how "wet proof" it still is. I removed it from my last bike before I sold it. Under the seat is a good idea but very inconvenient. But this little bike sure is short on real estate for things like that. I think the base of my windshield & support is going to become a "catch all" for a lot of things.

As kind of a cross-over with another thread: If you have a "lot of things" to mount on or near the handle bars.......you might have lost sight of the main objective and may not be worthy of the label "biker". :biggrin:

Especially if the things take your attention away from the road.

Lets see....so far I have a cup holder for beer That keeps me in the biker rank.

A pouch for my sun glasses so I look super cool :cool: That keeps me in the biker rank.

A guardian bell to keep away bike gremlins :twisted: (real bikers know for certain there are bike gremlins so that keeps me qualified.)

I bought a 12volt accessory plug ($8.00) at WalleyWorld, wired tired it to the handlebars (next to the right riser) and directly wired it to the battery. It doesnt draw power unless something is plugged in; it also has a weather cover which automatically closes when you unplug. I have the same setup on the C50. I didnt/dont have any problems running my GPS or my Zune.
