Speedometer

Hello, I just recently bought a 2002 250 from a guy for 1000 dollars. It has 6k miles on it and it's in great shape externally. when riding, I noticed the tripometer doesn't work and neither does the light for the speedo. With more riding I noticed that the spedometer will jump when I'm reving high and also sometimes it will not work. Today I took it apart to have a look and it seems that someone busted it up inside and taped it back together with what seems to be packaging tape. Any advice on what to do with this? I had a guy look at it a couple days ago and said it's in great shape other than a little dry rot on the tires.
with all of that being said, any advice on the best place to get the full unit? i'm googling the hell out of "Speedometer unit" and "odometer unit" and all that's popping up are small parts. thanks!

Yeah, I was thinking eBay would be your best bet if the current one is not salvagable.

I've only had one speedometer purchase on eBay and fortunately that worked out well for me (for an 82 GS450), so hoping this situation will work for you!

Re: Speedometer

CHANGE THOSE TIRES!!
If they are original to the bike, 11 years old, (look at the date stamp in a rectangular box imprinted on the sidewall for week and year of manufacture) not only are they "dry rotted", but the rubber is very hard and brittle and has little traction on the road. Those tires are way beyond their life expectancy.
This is your life and safety you are talking about, so get new tires ASAP.

Re: Speedometer

Absolutely toss the tires. Any tire 5 years from it's date of manufacture is toast. All tires suffer from the same malady. Car, truck, bike or wheel barrow from any manufacturer.
New tires are an investment in safety. We will help with tire availibility.
Ya gotta ride safe.
