Dies when goes into first gear!

Just had a hilariously funny/scary/stupid moment today on the new bike.Got to to work and was wondering if it was having trouble getting into gear so after i had stopped and de-helmeted i thought id try it again. Started it, put it into gear and CLUNK, stopped. Tried again, and again, and so on. Started to think my just bought bike was going belly up! Went around the corner to a mechanic and asked them. First said he had no idea but one of the other guys wondered in, listened to my sob story and mentioned that the only thing he could think of was the kick stand switch. 'what the heck is that'? being my response. He explained and the light of hope sprang up, dashing back i jumped on the bike, did everything as before, except this time i put the *&#@* stand up. Starts as per normal. PHEW. I just wish the dealer had of told me! Then again, i gues ive been out of biking for about fifteen years so these new fangled gadgets are bound to trip me up occassionaly. Anyway alls well as ends well!

Aren't all modern equipped with a side-stand switch?
Glad it all worked out for you.

Those side stand switches are known to fail. Should something like this come up again in the future, check that first.

Welcome to the forum. My older 1990 454 LTD had a side-stand switch until I removed it.

The side stand switch is a safety item so you don't ride off and make a left turn and have the bike kick out from under you when the stand hits the road and lifts the rear wheel off the ground. Not a good idea to disable the switch.

Re: Dies when goes into first gear!

I hope you weren't talking to me, about disabling the sidestand cutoff switch and riding off. No. I never did that, just aware of the problem. That's why it's made like that on practically every motorcycle in the last decade.
I would bet almost everyone at one time or another, as a newbie to bikes, has had it stall when putting it into gear, forgetting to raise the stand and then wondering for a second, or a minute, why it stalls. Embarrassing, but that's how you learn, and at least if you make that little mistake, you don't get hurt, except for your ego.

Re: Dies when goes into first gear!

Hi VK. Yeah, the same thing happens to me on occasion, except usually it's right after I've filled up with gas and I find that the starter button suddenly doesn't work. It's a little 1 1/2 second panic before I realize that my stand is down (and I'm still in gear) but then I'm happy that I didn't ride off that way.
