Lesson learned - Pay attention

I made many mistakes in this near-lowside. I was closer to going down than it seems in the video.

[youtube:rpcnwzq3]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjkCCzfFaoA[/youtube:rpcnwzq3]

First, and primarily, was not paying attention. I focused on the passing riders and didn't pay attention to the upcoming intersection.
A close Second was that I was carrying too much speed for the rapidly approaching turn.
Third, I didn't pay attention to the road conditions. I would have been in a real bad spot if there was heavier cross-traffic.
Fourth was lane position. With the sandy roads this early in the season, I was in position 2 when I should have been in position 1 or 3.

Any more glaring mistakes/suggestions?

Well my thoughts are as follows....

well done on the recovery. it could have been a lot worse with all that sand on the road and the front locking up and sliding. It appears you didn't panic as badly as you could have, and you kept it upright.

Beyond that, I think you've nailed what went wrong quite well.

My suggestion is......change your shorts and have a cold beer.

You've cheated the reaper.

Re: Lesson learned - Pay attention

Congratulations on staying upright. Whew.

I once locked my front brake, going about 45 on normal asphalt. A car came up from the right and I thought I was going to ram into it. When the front slid away about one foot, I let go of the brake handle and didn't fall.

Those moments stay with you for a long time.

I keep watching the video and reliving it. It brings the adrenalin right back every time.

I'm guessing that you saved your ass partly by NOT over-correcting during the slide.

What was happening with the rear brake at the time; don't think that has been mentioned yet.

It stayed locked most of the time until I was corrected to a vertical position. That's the first thing that skid...it was instantaneous.
