How much does your helmet weigh?

I was out this weekend doing some "research" for longer trip planned for later this month and I got the stiff neck/upper back muscle spasms I was plagued with on other long rides. (Also the itchy nose!) After doing some checking online, although I was not able to find any definitive cause for this, I have come to suspect the weight of my helmet. I wear a fill face HJC touring and I did a non scientific check against my 3/4 and it seemed a lot heavier. My wife weighed them on a postal scale anf Full Face = 3 lbs, 14 ounces and 3/4 = 3lbs, 5 ounces. I'm gonna look into a lighter helmet, but I was curious...

Re: How much does your helmet weigh?

Arai Quantum II (L): 3 lb 6.7 oz (Full Face Helmet)

Shoei RJ-AIR (S): 2 lb 12 oz (3/4 Helmet)

Even though one is a large and the other a small, they both fit me perfectly, which says something about the consistency of sizing among different makers.

Arai Vector (S): 3 lb 5 oz (daughter's FF Helmet).

HJC CL-15 (L): 3 lb 14.5 oz (My old FF Helmet).

I think, but I'm not sure, that there are lighter FF helmets than any of these out there, DOT and Snell approved, but they cost.

Very small differences in weight can make quite a difference in neck comfort over long rides, but much more important is getting the riding position right for you. If your neck isn't just where it wants to be, it'll hurt after a while. Arm position can have a big influence on how the nape of your neck feels also, so you have to get the handlebars right for you.

Re: How much does your helmet weigh?

My Skyline half helmet weighs just over 2 pounds. I thought the FF helmets would weigh a lot more.

Re: How much does your helmet weigh?

Thanks for info. My handlebars are set at stock. I am average height (5'11") so I figured they are probably "right" but I don't really know how to tell.

Sit on the bike. Close your eyes. Put your arms out until they feel comfortable. Open your eyes, & see where your hands are, in relation to the bars. :2tup:

Re: How much does your helmet weigh?

I have a Nolan Xlite composite fibre full face helmet: 2 lbs 14 oz.
Confortable and pretty cheap too, the padding is a little weak and as i have long hair some wind comes in from under the left ear making some awful noise. On the other side i've been using it for three years so maybe it's time for new fluff
