Re: Tag-o-rama Gone Global
Well, I'm thinking Alan has a shot at this, since that's a landmark water pumping station on Tenerife.
Casa Hamilton, I believe.

Re: Tag-o-rama Gone Global
Never heard of Casa Hamilton, and didn't even know that there was a pumping station on the island. It just dawned on me that there are some giant, circular, concrete, tanks that the farmers use to collect the water that runs down the mountain. If I go out today (and remember to take my camera  ) I'll see if I can find one close to the road.
BTW, just tried Casa Hamilton on Google Earth, & it drew a blank.

[attachment=0:1dcafr4y]view 3.jpg[/attachment:1dcafr4y]Wow.......Beautiful! I live around 4 or 5 kilometers from Puerto de la Cruz, and never ever heard of it. The zig zag that you can see running down the mountain is the old stone water channels that are a common sight, bringing the water down the mountain. Never knew we needed a pumping station, as everyone lives below the water table, so we get water by gravity. Dunno where they would pump it to.
EDIT:- Just taken another look at the photo. It shows the pumping station as being at Los Realejos - the next village along the road from us - The reason I've never seen it is that it appears to be down a track, among the houses, that, normally, no one would go down without a specific reason. I frequently go to Los Realejos, but never down to the sea. The photo I've put here shows the view from our balcony. Los Releajos is just this side of the mountains you can see in the background.

Re: Tag-o-rama Gone Global
Just a thought but I think we can include a dam site as a storage unit for water. A water tower my not be possible for some folks so we should widen the field a bit to include untreated water storage too.

Re: Tag-o-rama Gone Global
Alantf, you may get water by gravity down the side of the mountains but I'm sure the pumping station is used to maintain adequate pressure throughout the entire system. At higher water demand times the pressure by gravity alone will drop to an unuseable level. At that time you need to increase the pressure by means of a pump and water storage reservoir. At night the reservoir is refilled when demand is lowest and the circle goes around the next day again.
That was my job for the last few years before retirement. Play with pumps, res levels and water demand for half a million folks with flush toilets. A major fire really gets iffy when the fire dept says we need more pressure and keep it coming. It was all a game but a serious one at times. |
