Re: First ride on new GZ 250.

My insurance is $88 per year for two bikes with 250/500/250. $75 for first bike and $13 for adding on second.

My Vstrom is $70 per month every month of the year. I should stop insuring it during the winter as I rarely ride and just leave it parked.

Re: First ride on new GZ 250.

What really annoys me is that I'm insured (both car & bike) with an international company, Axa. I see on the English television adverts, that in England drivers can earn up to 90% discount for years of no claims. Here there is only a few%.

It's not just the money but your quality of life that takes hit. There are a lot of things you can't do with empty pockets.

i have a friend that live somewhere in canada and she said that's how much she has to pay if she get a motorcycle and + she has to have a permit/licensed before they sell her any bike, i bought my GZ then after a week I got my permit..P.S In my neck of the woods they don't even require you to have motorcyle insurance..

Re: First ride on new GZ 250.

Canada is finally getting smarter with the licensing requirements and having a graduated system for both cars and bikes. Some things vary from province to province but overall it is much better.
There ar still a lot of us older riders who never had to have any rider training or even a test of any sort for a bike license. We were automatically considered 2 wheel capable if we passed our car license requirements.
In 2006 Lynda bought her GZ, got her plate and insurance but I rode it home. A written test got her a graduated license with limitations. Now rider training is an automatic requirement for newbies in British Columbia.

To get a Motorcycle license on P.E.I., drivers have to apply for a beginner's permit, which allows them to drive for 30 days under certain restrictions. Then, they take a road test. There is no mandatory training for new riders, but there is an optional two-day course you can take at the cost of about $400.00

The training should be mandatory. A lot of folks only think they can ride safely. I was of that mind set until I took the course and shelled out $700 to do it after riding for decades with no problems. I learned more than I thought there was to learn and consider the training an asset to safe and enjoyable riding. After the course I realized how lucky I had been and how hard my Guardian Angel was working all those years.
Some riders actually do the Experienced rider training with each new bike they acquire and swear by it.

It was a mess when I got my first bike (scooter). State law requires you to have a motorcycle endorsement on your license but to get the endorsement you must ride a bike that has insurance. However the state also requires that the insurance companies must have proof of endorsement to write the insurance rider for the bike. Rather a catch 22 situation. The only thing the officials can say is borrow a friends bike. I have plenty of friends with bikes and you would come closer to sleeping with their wife than riding their bike. I had a guy contact me from CL wanting to pay me $60 to use my insured Scooter to take his skills test for the endorsement. I said sure, but you must place a $500 cash deposit in my hand before you ride which would be immediately refunded upon my receiving my scooter back in same condition as lent. I have not heard back from him.
