geezer, there have been wide variations in claimed top speed. Mine is completely stock and largely un-effed with in any area and, on a flat road, with minimal wind, if i scrunch down behind the shield, I can get it over 70 - possibly as high as 74-75 if the road is smooth (the speedo isn't exactly all that precise to begin with.) I think I can get it going faster with no shield and in a full on tuck position - so that's one factor to consider. The other is that, despite riding it here and there for almost three years now, I have yet to crack the magical 5000 mile mark where it is considered truly broken in (but I'm close 4600 give or take.) Perhaps at 5K it will magically kick into a new gear. I do feel like there might be more to get out of it - when I am really humping on the freeway, I'm limited to fourth gear (and 65-67) for any wind, incline, rough road etc. I feel like if it could only have the torque to really drive the fifth gear it could hit those 80mph marks. So good luck with your tweaking.
On the other hand, my Strat will do at least 115 without breaking a sweat, and, by my calculations would redline at about 155-160 if I had the balls and the tires to go there (I have neither, esp the balls.) The Kawa 650 will also do at least 100 (but I don't think much more.)

My performance is very much like Alan's. I've got the 16-tooth sprocket and I have no trouble getting up into the 70 mph neighbourhood. Hit 72 last night, with a windshield, and without scrunching (and I'm pretty tall in the saddle), but throw in a headwind or hills and I'm slowing down or shifting down. The cool thing about 16T is that I can go at least 70mph in 4th without getting near the red-line. Some piece of mind for those of us running without a tach.

im sayi9ng that to run that speed the engine had to be at max rpm, screw that id rather not. i wonder if the 16 would be good for me cause i do alot of mount riding

A 16 tooth sprocket and 4th gear might be quite handy in hilly country. 4th for going uphill and 5th for going downhill and on flat ground. There is really only one way to find out. A new front sprocket is not that expensive.

i might consider, but im trying to sell the bike, but i do what to richen up the carb and add that sproket so well see

Geeze,
If you really want more power (like for highway riding), by all means upgrade. But if the bike is basic around town, you should be able to get 50-65 out of it without any mechanical magic and regardless of the temperature.

dont get me wrong i like the bike but it was for my girl and we broke up so now i got this bike im not wanting for myself all that much. ive had more pwerful bikes power really isnt my thinkg im more into economy myself :2tup:
