I put Wd-40 into the cyclinder through the spark plug hole.

Mine too.

This is the time to do the 16T upgrade.....for free, effectively.
It should work OK with the stock length chain.....since there is only one tooth difference.

If it is out of adjustment and still making snapping noises......it could be worn so bad as to potentially be dangerous; don't put off this fix and continue riding it.

Given that, it would be an excellent idea to get some MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) and put a recommended dose of that in the first few tankfuls.....just to give the rings a little extra lubrication to finish the treatment that you started.

If there are signs of excess oil useage later, you might want to repeat your initial treatment, substituting MMO for the WD40.
