The Suzuki service manual should have measurements to determine chain replacement. It will be a specific distance over a specific number of links. No more than "X" millimeters over a certain number of links measured from pin to pin. When I measured the Vstrom chain after 25,000 km it was just a bit past the maximum allowed so I just replaced the chain and both sprockets.

When they start requiring adjustment much more often or show other signs of wear, THEN it's time to replace.......hopefully a LOT more than 5,000 miles. If you have a brand new bike, you want to check it more often in the first couple of thousand miles as it may need a couple of adjustments as it "breaks in".
