On mine you just put the seat in place then push down firmly on the back on the seat and it snaps right in. No key necessary. If yours doesn't go right in, try Easy Rider's suggestion and lube it up.

My seat has no play in it at all. It also will lock down into place without the key. My bike is a 2005.
