I changed account activation to user. This will force the SPAM bot to have a valid email address and respond to the email to activate an account. Hopefully this will slow them down a bit.

Its not a spam bot. I have it set to the 'image' when you sign up. So they have to enter what the image says to continue. So its human (been reading up on spam bot forums on phpbb forums). Thats why i went for the word filters instead. Theres a few mods to help with this, but most of them do spam bots and not human. Other than some word filter error messages.

I have tested the user activation and it works. Its sends them an email with a link to activate the account.

This should make it hard for them and block most because they use bogus email addresses for the most part.
