Howdy from Missouri. I bought my gz 250 today and it's my first motorcycle. Will be taking my safety course in 2 weeks. Picked up a 2006 with 2000 on it.

Welcome to the forum from South Carolina. If you haven't already I'd recommend you take the MSF BRC (Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course). It's the best investment in your safety you can make. Ride safe.
