Try Florida right on the coast for rust. All the spokes on my S50's wheels are rusted, now coated with a phosphoric acid coating to prevent further rust and convert it to ferrous sulfide, not oxide. Looks like crap but at least it's not rusting anymore. Maybe I'll have to clean it with a fine emory cloth and spray paint it or just leave it like it is. Too much constant work to keep it shiny.

For minor rust issues the easiest way to get rid of it is aluminum foil. I know it sounds weird but wad it up into a loose ball and the scrubing away like a sand paper, it gets rust spots off and brings back an awesome shine. Just when you do it make sure you go completely in the same direction.

Walmart idea sounds good if they have something part time like I need.

I did the aluminum foil thing, and chrome polish, and everything else, but when it's rusted (not just a light surface coating), it's done. The only thing that would restore it is to have it all sandblasted and then powdercoated, but not worth it for spokes.

Sandblasting sounds like an idea. After that you might just invest in a Krylon clear plastic rattle can. Sandblasting could be down before new tires are put on bare rims.

Chromed plastic is cheaper and lighter than chromed metal. What else can we expect on some price point bikes.

Your right,I forgot about those.Even on my 1990 454 the speedometer & tach housings are plastic.

Got new tires on already, before the rusted spokes turned into a real mess, Had it been that way before, I would have had them cleaned off much easier. It would be much harder to do it now but not impossible.
