Group riding

me and my mom are planning on riding together soon. I just had a quick question about stop signs. When two or more motorcycles are stopped at a stop sign together do they go once at a time or can they all go together? ya its probably a dumb question but i just want to make sure

When I ride with anyone else, the person closest to the center line takes off first. But that is how we ride. Discuss it before you take off on your ride.

I would suggest both mom and daughter take a rider training course together. The group ride will be addressed and many handy safety tips brought up. There are some Do's and Don'ts that are never a concern until a rider gets hurt. By then it is too late. Also pick up a copy of Proficient Motorcycling by David Hough.

Not necessarily. The BRC nor the ERC courses from the MSF do not address group riding in any way. Your state motorcycle driver's manual should address the issue, though.

Your best bet is to discuss it before hand. Bonehead said what I do when I ride with someone. One rider (usually closest to the centerline) takes off first and the second rider takes off just after keeping the staggered formation. Intersections are the most dangerous place, so you don't want to be right beside another bike through one in case an emergency swerve or brake is required.

No, not dumb at all. Other answers are good but I think a point was missed.

At a stop sign, one ROW of bikes can all go when it is your turn BUT each should survey the traffic and not start to go just because the bike beside you did. Or to put it another way, you can break the stager at the stop sign and line up side by side ONLY for going across the intersection.

YOU SHOULD NEVER FOLLOW ANOTHER BIKE THROUGH ON HIS TURN.

OH, and no more than 2 bikes per lane.

I have seen bikes go 4 abreast on a 4-lane road at a stop sign and go through 4 at a time.....but that never seemed smooth to me. My advice is to keep the bikes to one lane and go 2 at a time.

The training course we took included a group ride and the proper way to do it. We actually spent 2 entire days on the street as a group. Without everyone being on the same page things can go bad quickly. One trainee had prior riding experience and did not like being told how to ride in a group. After the 3rd near miss we all refused to be anywhere near her. She did not get a passing mark. Of course her failure to ride safely and properly was some one else's fault.
