Large Pop...Is it the end

Hello,

Driving on the highway Saturday I heard a loud Pop from the left side of the engine then a very loud noise like there was no exhaust on the bike. I think I dropped a valve or worse. When I turn the key on the headlight works but none of the lights on the "dash" light up. I am guessing I have to take the engine completely out and see if it was the valve or piston. Would you recommend cyclepedia as a reference for something this detailed? Thank you!

"Loud noise like there was no exhaust on the bike."
Was the motor still pulling you down the road?

When you crank the motor does it turn over very fast or about the same as it used too?

I assume it does turn over but wont fire... Is that true?

Sounds like you blew a fuse. Find, replace and see what happens.

Yes you are correct..like there is no compression. I also hear a sound that sounds like..gulping when I turn it over. Thanks for your time and response.

K.
Loss of all power at the point of loud noise.
Motor turns over faster than normal but doesn't fire.
odd noise upon cranking.
And I assume you don't have a compression test guage.

Pull off the two small covers on the head held on by two 10mm bolts each. (you need to pull the gas tank for this)
Crank motor... Do you see stuff go up and down on both sides? (One two fingered arm depressing two shafts with springs each side?)
If yes then it sounds like your loud bang was piston rod related.
If no then check timing chain and everything involved with it.
Honestly. You may be solidly in motor build territory.
wish I was there to check for you

A quick clarification on cranking without compression. It turns over fast like no spark plug. Without the huffing like no spark plug.

Gulping sound sounds like some compression might still be happening.

Welp.
Tropical storm bill has decided to keep me home today.
Lemme know details if you like over the next few hours. I'm not goin anywhere....
Except maybe Redbox to return two movies, fMcdonalds to get lunch and store to get some
more manna from the heavens... err uh... I mean beer.
Now I'm gonna watch Chappie. Saw American Sniper last night and it was good. Hope this
film is good too.
I'll check back periodically.
