My Ammo Box project

Wanted a little bit of storage. Something to throw gloves, a hat, and a little this and that if I ran to the store.

Did a bunch of research on this site and the net and came up with this.

One ammo box, SAW

Two extended bolts

Two lock washers, washers, nuts

Two large rubber gaskets, and two smaller

Two 5" by 1" L brackets.

The large gaskets are to protect the chrome from the L brackets, the small ones are inside the box to prevent water from coming in.

So far about 400 miles with it, no problems, knock on wood

Need to glue down handle, it is beginning to drive me nuts

Re: My Ammo Box project

Nice job and not an expensive storage box either. Those things are almost indestructable under anything except a nuclear blast. Just had a thought about the handle rattle. Get some velcro with tape on the back side. One piece on the lid and one piece under the handle. That should hold the handle under most conditions and the handle is still useable when needed.
A Dollar store, sewing center or Wally Word fabric dept should have the velcro.

Re: My Ammo Box project

Love the idea & the look. Pity that ammo boxes are an American thing. I reckon that's about the only place in the world where they're readilly available.

Alan, if you'd like one I'd be glad to get you one from the local Army Surplus store and ship it to you. Send me a PM if I you are interested.

Thanks. At the moment I've got leather saddle bags. Problem is, they don't hold much. But if I decide to change in the future, I'll certainly let you know.

Re: My Ammo Box project

Okay Alan, just let me know if you ever want to try one out. Those baby's are stacked on pallets in stores all over the place around here. I think they go for around $10-$15 dollars U.S.

Re: My Ammo Box project

Nice job! Looks like the perfect size for the GZ. I'll have to check out the local surplus store for this size box.

Re: My Ammo Box project

One ammo box, SAW

Two extended bolts

Two lock washers, washers, nuts

Two large rubber gaskets, and two smaller

Two 5" by 1" L brackets, the L brackets are the kind you find in shelving, predrilled with 3 holes on each length

I went to the local hardware, bought the bolts to match diameter and highest quality I could get. I think they were 1/2" longer.

1-Remove original bolts
2-install extended bolts
3-place L brackets onto side of ammo can you want facing bike
4-mark ammo can for drilling
5-drill bottom hole on vertical of L bracket, I had forward bracket about 1/4" from front of ammo can, second bracket was measured to match rear bolt, watch force so you don't dent can
6-spray can and brackets color of choice, I used black satin
7-place L brackets onto bolts with large rubber gasket between bracket and chrome trim, used bottom hole on vertical for clearance of shock
8-place can onto brackets inserting bolts, can should rest on horizontal part of brackets
9-put small rubber washers onto bolts sticking into can, followed by flat washer, then lock washer, then nut.
10-After a couple weeks, I used epoxy to glue down the handle, was rattling like mad

I have been using this on my bike for several weeks now. I have been very happy. Great for throwing a load of bread or a couple odds and ends into. Nice spot for the phone and wallet. I thought of doing two, but didn't need that much space.

Good luck, hope this helps
