Rookie Rider~

What a nice Gift and especially a nice Wife.

Usually it's the other way around where the
surprise is a new Baby and then the Wife
will demand you get rid of the Bike.

Don't know a lot about changing the Exhaust
other than it may be more trouble than it's worth.
I'm sure there's more Info in the "Performance Mods".

Re: Birthday Surprise

I'm with Stelock on the merit of swapping out the muffler, but leaving that part of it aside - make sure you understand the relationship between the exhaust and the carburetor before you start drilling holes or making other modifications. I think a few people on here have had some success in making the muffler either a) look cooler (wrapped, bobber, etc.) or b) sound different (usually louder.) However, there have probably been an equal number of posts where either someone inherited a modded exhaust or attempted it and effed up the fuel mix.

It's possible to do and, from what I've read, is not necessarily rocket science, but do your homework before your start cutting, drilling or welding and you will probably save yourself a few unanticipated "extra steps."

Also, check your state laws. There have been some recent developments on exhaust mods that might affect you should your mod result in a louder bike and someone bitches about it.

Oh, and welcome, and enjoy your new bike!

Welcome to the forum from South Carolina. As a new rider I'd recommend you sign up for the MSF BRC (Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course). It will help you build good habits and avoid bad ones. It's one of the best investments you can make in your safety. Ride safe.

Re: Birthday Surprise

Congrats on the birthday surprise. Love that red color. You may want to re-think changing the exhaust. If your bike runs good, and there is no problems with the muffler, I would suggest leaving it be. The GZ'er doesn't have to sound like a Harley, You can usually see them at the gas pump when you are riding by with fuel still in your tank. Good luck with the ride. GZBrian
