Mulling Mojave

Now that Vegas is done, I'm giving some thought to my next two wheeled adventure. I've covered a good deal of, if not most, of the territory between Anaheim and Mendocino, including King's, Sequoia and Yosemite (haven't been to Tahoe [on the bike anyway] and there's a few parts of Kern I skipped over.) Plus I knocked Death Valley off the list early last October. Assuming I don't lose interest, here's some possibilities:

1) Mojave Desert - been all around it, just not through it. Not sure if there is any "There" there, but I have the KLR and I suspect there is some "good" dirt opportunities. Might be a bit beyond my capabilities and comfort zone.
2) Salton Sea - probably another good KLR candidate. Always heard weird things about hippie encampments - not sure I'm that interested in seeing weird people. Or any people.
3) US40 to Needles, Kingman, eventually Grand Canyon or Bryce or both. A longer trip, maybe too long, but would have good camping possibilities - seen most of that route in an RV trip back in early 90's. Still, probably a good Stratoliner trip.

Anybody on here ever ride to/through the Mojave desert? I know there's a big Air Force base out there somewhere, but other than numerous "Gateway to Mojave" exits off the 15, I'm not really sure there's even gas... or anything worth riding past. The KLR does have the 6.1 gallon tank, and gets better mileage than the Strat. Might have to order the bigger windshield though.

I have been. But not recently. If I recall correctly you are not allowed to ride the KLR in the actual canyon. I remember hiking down into it and it being a bit of a hike back up.
