Electronic Start issues....

ok, just really to confirm my thinking on this situation....

Go out this morning to come to work, key in, bike in neutral, headlight nice and bright, push the starter and nothing. No clilck, no whirrs, no start. Soo....
- the headlight does not dim when the switch is pushed
- the battery is less than 3 months old, and is showing as fine in relation to charge (12v or a little higher)
so my thoughts on the situation are as follows
- the ignition relay is blown. meaning replace.
- the switch itself isn't contacting due to much outside living that my bike does.

Thoughts?

More likely the switch than the relay. But ......... until you put your meter on, it's just going to be guesswork. You might as well flip a coin.

Re: Electronic Start issues....

Charge up your battery completely before doing anything else.
I assume you pulled in the clutch lever and the RUN switch is in the proper position when you hit the starter button?
Flick the Run/Stop switch back and forth a number of times - it could have some moisture or corrosion in it.
Spray it with some electrical contact cleaner or WD40. Same thing with the starter switch.

Do you mean the starter relay? You can jump that and see if the starter motor turns over. If the starter works, then the relay or one of the contacts to it is bad. Try to analyze each thing before going out and buying replacement parts. And look at the more accessible things first, like the starter and relay are easier to get to than jumping the RUN or starter switch.

I'm sure there will be innumerable other suggestions to follow.

Re: Electronic Start issues....

well thanks, Battery is fully charged, mostly cause the charger I have tells me so, (green light instead of red, and the multimeter test gave me a good strong result)....

Clutch pulled in, run switch in the go now position, I rarely use it, prefering to use the key or the sidestand to kill the engine. Bike in neutral on the sidestand, bike with sidestand up, no change. The bike runs after a roll start, but not when using the electric start.

What do you mean by "jump that and see if the starter motor turns over"?

You can bridge across the big lugs on the solenoid and "force" the starter to run......unless there is a cable loose or the starter is bad. Doing that bypasses the start switch and all the safeties.

Checking voltages with a meter is probably a wiser course of action.
My money is on the start button switch itself......or one of the safety switches.

Sorted. 10,000kms and 10ish years of assorted gunk removed from the starter switch, hit it with the WD-40 for good measure, and we have a winner!
Thanks guys for teh speedy responses and all your help!

Re: Electronic Start issues....

Hit the starter switch with electrical contact cleaner rather than relying on WD40- glad you got it going by looking at the simple things first instead of replacing things that don't need to be replaced. While you're at it, spray the other switches too, like the RUN/Stop switch, they may not be far behind in having the same problem.
