Winter Oil change

I was wondering if anyone has in input into whether 10 W 40 or 5 w 40 is better for a GZ in temperatures of -3 to +10 degrees Celcius.

I do store it in the garage most days especially if its raining.

If i do go with 5 W 40 should i get a particular brand..??

Either should be fine for those temps HOWEVER be sure you check the ratings and avoid "energy conserving" or "friction modifiers". That is more common as the first number becomes smaller.

To be really safe, use a motorcycle oil.....although that should not be necessary.

A lot of riders seem to like Shell Rotella T Synthetic ......yes, a diesel oil !!

I'll back that up. Both oils are suited for those temperatures. I usually go with a smaller first number in the winter, just because. I have never really had a problem with either and to be honest, can't tell a difference.

If you are going to use a Dino oil get a 5W40. Synthetic get a 10W40.

For -3 to 10 the standard 10W-40 would work. It works equally well both in cold winters and hot summers down here.

Don't forget - for those of you who want to lay up the bike for the winter, change the oil first in the Fall before putting it away, not in the Spring when you recommission it. You don't want the old dirty oil with the acids in it sitting in the engine and trans over the layup period, you want to put it away with clean oil. And get a battery tender and keep the battery up and charged so it doesn't freeze or crap out from the cold and neglect over the winter. Maybe also elevate the bike off the tires if you can.
