The stem hole usually is larger for a tubless rim to accomodate the larger "pop in" stem that must seal the hole and hold pressure. The smaller stem of a tube fits in there just fine, however, and there is some reinforcement around the base of the stem that prevents it from bulging out. Sometimes there is even a ring you screw on the outside to firm it up even more. The smaller stem hole on a tube type rim should give you pause if you try to put a tubeless tire on it.......and the stem won't fit in the smaller hole. Alas, some folks are so dense that they drill out the hole to MAKE it fit.
