Wont start

Just jioned, looking for info on a friends bike, but feel ,may be on from time to time helping her. Ok, have fully charged battery, been on trickle charge for 5 days. 13.2 volts on install, 12.9 after trying to start once. Will turn over 2-3 times the stop turning, no selonoid clicking, just stops cranking. Pulled boot back from bolt that connects wire to starter and is hot enough that can only touch for a second or 2. Turns slow when it does turn. Checked on Cheapcycleparts for new starter, just incase. Only shows parts for it, not complete starter. Is there a way of checking the starter without having to tear apart? Is there something else I should be looking at? I'm fair, but no expert in these matters. Have done all my own maintenance on my own bike, but its a 800 Vulcan, different animal. Be very thankful for any help.

Re: Wont start

Try and jump start from a *NON-running* car (car should NOT have its engine running!) If it starts, get a new battery and carefully fully charge it before install.

If it is the starter after all, wait for someone else to reply, I have no clue there.

Re: Wont start

Had battery tested, showing 181 cca, rated for 80 cca I believe. Checked continuity between winding in armeture and shaft, tested good, no continuity. Also checked continuity between all points of armiture, all showed continuity. Reassembled starter and reinstalled on bike. Now starter spins but not turning motor. Guess next step is to check the starter clutch. Any suggestions?

Re: Wont start

I think you're on the right path. If the starter is free spinning then you have a contact to starter clutch/gear problem .
