New 2001 GZ250 Owner

Hi Everyone,

I purchase my 2001 GZ250 from Craigslist about 2 months ago. It had about 4000 miles on it, and is in relatively good condition. I've frequented these forums during that time and found the information here extremely, extremely useful. I just wanted to introduce myself and thank all of the forum members for their contributions.

Using the information on the forum, I have done the following maintenance to my bike so far:

-Changed the oil (fully synthetic) and the oil filter
-Changed the spark plug
-Changed the brake light bulb
-Cleaned the air filter and drained the "spit valve"

I'm planning on doing the following maintenance on my bike in the next couple of weeks:

-Adjust the valve clearance (I'm waiting on a mail ordered valve adjustment tool)
-Replace several rusted bolts with stainless steel equivalents
-Add an inline fuel filter

I've also been helping my friend perform maintenance on his 1974 BMW which has been really informative. We just adjusted his valve clearances yesterday.

So far I've really been enjoying the GZ250. I weigh about 185 lbs and have had no problems with performance. It seems fine at about 65 mph on the highway, and the acceleration is excellent. I have put about 350 miles on the bike so far, and will be ready to replace both tires in another 600 miles or so.

I also took the Motorcycle Safety course here in PA which was really informative.

I had a couple of questions regarding potential improvements for the bike that I will ask in another forum.

Thanks for the great info, and the forum!

Sincerely,

Rob

Re: New 2001 GZ250 Owner

This being my first bike, I don't really have a basis for comparison for the acceleration. That being said, starting up from a red light seems great to me. The only time I noticed performance issues is going up steeper hills. This normally requires that I downshift to maintain adequate performance.

I can keep up just fine with my buddy's 750cc BMW in most normal situations. Going up hill, and riding on highways is where the 250cc engine really begins to show its limitations.

Re: New 2001 GZ250 Owner

Welcome aboard. I had a similar experience of getting my bike off craigslist. I'm hoping for the best since tonight my friend is coming over to true my back wheel. If all goes well I can get back on my bike after a week and a half of not being able to ride. I'm not fully regretting my purchase, but there are a lot of things I've learned that I would have passed on this bike if I knew ahead of time. Still, once I get things going again I'll feel better.

Welcome aboard. We got our GZ on Craiglist as well. Sounds like your on your way to keeping her running good. Lots of good advice on the board so just ask. Take care and ride safe. GZBrian
