La Orotava sand carpets
With Corpus Christi upon us, I'd just like to offer you something that may show you a different culture.
Since 1847, it's been a tradition in our local town (La Orotava) to have a "sand carpet". This is a work of art, different every year, done entirely of different coloured sand, gathered from the slopes of Mt. Teide, and done on the plaza del ayuntamiento (the square in front of the town council offices) It attracts visitors from all over the world. Tomorrow there'll be a church procession, which ends with them all gathering in the square and destroying all the beautiful work by walking over it. If you watch this video, remember that the pictures are made entirely of sand, sprinkled by the artists' hands. Now you can see where I've decided to spend my retirement in tranquility, and why a bike is the ideal transport on these narrow cobbled streets.
