Cover when wet?

Is it alright to cover the bike when it's wet or is it better to let it dry off?
I cover my bike every night but my friend says you shouldn't cover them when they're wet because of rust damage or something. I was just wondering if i'm slowly damaging my bike.
(It's parked under a tree so it's either this or get the spores and gunge dropping off the bottom of the leaves and that stuff is REALLY hard to get off the tank!)

Re: Cover when wet?

I would find a new place to park as covering the bike wet is not a good idea. There are rust issues and possibilly staining the paint.

:plus1:

However.....the best compromise might be to get a "breathable" or vented cover.

As an alternative, go out before you turn in for the night and cover it THEN......after it has had a chance to dry off. If it is still raining at that point, it probably won't make any difference as it would probably stay wet all night anyway, cover or no.

Bikes in your situation NEED the metal parts polished/waxed more often than one that stays inside. Whatever rust/corrosion that does develop is mostly cosmetic.

Re: Cover when wet?

The cover I have, if it rains the bike gets a little damp anyway. You can always build a garage or buy a portable building to store it in.

Re: Cover when wet?

ha seeing as i can hardly hardley construct a dinner for myself i doubt the garage will be happening - i'll look into a breathable cover - first cover i bought said it was and cost me €50 euro but it fell apart (partially my fault for covering it too soon after my ride and the exhaust sticking). The second one i go on e-bay for €5 and has lasted longer! - could be worth the investment though - nothing get rust out...

thanks guys
