The petcock only has a wire mesh screen which filters out "chunky" particles beofre they go in the carb. These inline filters filter the gas down to an even finer level. You'll still want to run carb cleaner though a tank of gas every now and then, just to be safe.

These just pretty much guarantee than nothing larger than a few microns will slip through. (Maybe not that small but you get the idea)

My bike kept stalling out, I took the carb off and found a bunch of sand like crud in the bowl. Cleaned the carb and it kept doing it. When I went to change the old dented tank, I found that the stem filter came loose from the petcock and was just laying in the bottom of the tank. So I installed one of those filters just in case it happens again. It sucks to remove and clean carb bowl on the side of the road...

I was actually thinking of removing the filter off of my petcock in the tank, and just having an external fuel filter so I would not have to worry about something inside the tank getting clogged and having to disassemble the tank just to fix it. That way when the fuel filter got dirty you could just snatch the old one off and slap a new one on.

It sounded good in theory till I started thinking about trash getting in the petcock and actually clogging it up and causing more trouble than I originally tried to get out of having, so I decided that wasn't a good idea. At least I decided it before I actually did it, huh.

Yeah.
You're right that you're original plan wasn't a good idea. If something were going to clog the wire-mesh screens, it would certainly clog the sinle inlet hole in the petcock itself.

However, you would certainly be sure that you were using every drop of gasoline in the tank.

Well you know, it was just an idea I was floating around. Like I said it sounded good to me until I factored in the whole trash flowing down through the petcock. :oops: O_o :sad:

And when the bike gets to be about 30 years old, it might even be a good thing to do.
I had an old Honda where the screens were corroded and falling apart.
