removing generator cover cap

I'm trying to do a valve adjustment and am using the directions given in an earlier post (viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5061&hilit=valve+adjustment+to ol). The problem is that I can't remove the generator cover cap; WD-40 isn't helping. Any suggestions? Either for getting that cap off or for doing the adjustment without removing the cap?
This is my first post and my first bike - I appreciate this forum and all the help everyone gives.
