I used to do that same thing to my GZ, (not every day though), but my current bike is a bit more heavy and I don't like doing it that way because it feels like i could lose control of it.
Good reason to have a mirror on a stick. The telescoping models are compact and easily stored in a tank bag or side case. Always remember to do a full light check at the beginning of the day too. You just never know when a bulb goes out due to vibration or age. It only takes a minute to be safe.
