Spedometer stopped working half way!

My spedometer stopped working out of nowhere half way on my drive to the gym this morning. The light still works/is on but the actual spedometer part just doesn't move. Electricity is getting flow though because the light is staying on.. Suggestions? Please give me some advice !

Re: Spedometer stopped working half way!

It's not an electric speedo. The only thing electric about it is the light. There is a cable that hooks into the back and spins the speedo gear. Check the connection on the back of the speedo where it goes in and also on the hub of the wheel where it connects down there. You can feel totally confident in removing the cable from the speedometer side and lubing it up. This will also give you a chance to inspect the cable end to make sure it isn't damaged or something weird.

It's all relatively simple. So no worries.

Re: Spedometer stopped working half way!

Mine stopped working at around 9000 miles. Found that the cable had snapped. Ordered a new cable, and it took ten minutes to fit. Unscrew the outer from the speedo, and see if you can pull the inner cable out. If you can, you'll see the broken end. Mine snapped around 1" from the wheel hub. Broken cable seems the most likely thing, and a real easy fix with a new cable.

Re: Spedometer stopped working half way!

I've had 4 or 5 bikes that have had the speedo stop working. They have all been a broken speedo cable. My GZ currently has a bad speedometer. I bought a new one to put on without even checking anything. I hope the problem is the same as all the others. lol

Re: Spedometer stopped working half way!

This is embarrassing and a good lesson... The cable had just come undone somehow. I didnt check to see because i figured connection wasn't the issue since the light was on. Later this morning on my way to school i was at a stoplight and looked down.... and there was my speedo cable dragging on the ground. I pulled over right away and got it screwed back in. The metal piece around the needle thing was a little beat up but it tightened right on and my speedo works fine now! I need to remember to check my bike over before I ride .

No worries - it happened to me a couple weeks ago, my speedometer stopped working for the same reason - I pulled over and screwed the cable back in.
