You will rarely need a half inch torque wrench so don't bother. I would be more inclined to buy a small quarter inch drive torque wrench for the smaller fittings to prevent snapping off bolts or stripping threads. Personally I do not use a torque wrench on anything and have never had a problem. Maybe I'm just lucky. I do however own 2. A 3/8th beam type and a 1/2 that I bought and have not used in over 17 years of ownership. I can't even remember why I bought it.

I have only used a torque wrench for doing lug nuts when changing tires on my car.
(Actually, I did use it when changing my front sprocket on the GZ, since it gave me great leverage.) But that's the only thing that was touched by a torque wrench when I had the GZ. I know there are people who like to make sure bolts are torqued to factory spec every time they work on their vehicle. But I'm like WW. Snug it up by feel and you'll probably never have to worry about it. I mean seriously, who torques the oil filter cover screws? Has anyone, ever? |

I never use a torque wrench.I just tighten by feel and use a drop of blue Loctite.It might be a good idea to use a small one if you are nervous about over tighten & stripping threads.I have been working around bikes & cars all my life & have a good feel for the tightness of bolts & nuts.

Well, I didn't actually mean that people need to torque their oil filter cover bolts, it was just an observation that many service manuals out there give torque specifications for almost every single bolt on the vehicle, regardless of whether or not it's really necessary. Do we really need to specifically torque the oil drain bolt? Except for the meaty-palmed members here, I think I've only heard of one or two guys stripping that thing.
I'm not against the use of a torque wrench. They're fantastic. But in daily use, I've always been able to go by feel. I can even torque wheel nuts by feel and I am usually within 10 ft/bls when I test it, if you can believe that. It's like muscle memory or something. That being said, I will admit that in defense of the torque stuff, I wouldn't be able to have that muscle memory had I not relied heavily on a torque wrench in the past. So, use one if you aren't sure about snugness or if it gives you a better peace of mind. |

I'll agree with the engine head bolts. When you dig into the internals, I would absolutely recommend a torque wrench for everything in there, on any vehicle, all the time.
