As for the steel wool.........I don't know how Alan was trying to use it but 0000 is about as damaging to good chrome as a cotton ball is to your face......unless you push really, REALLY hard. A spritz of WD and a gentle wipe with 0000 might be all you need IF it is a really thin coating. If it's thick, back to the stick.

If something like oven cleaner won't work with a blunt plastic or wooden scraper or the really fine steel wool, warm up the bike and try and scrape it off warm, it may be softer and easier to get off.

If all that doesn't work, then don't look at it.

I found with my two melt-ons was that once they baked on, they didn't get soft again. But continued baking made the plastic grocery bag melt more brittle (and it was thus relatively easier to persuade to come off.) The cordura just got more determined to be a big black hard crust. That one I eventually lost patience and took a screw driver to it. Didn't try the easy off. Also my steel wool was only three zeroes (000) and I guess steel wool grading is one more thing I don't know shit about because apparently I should have tried the four zero variety (0000) instead. (Didn't realize it's the *number* of zeroes, not the actual mathematical value, that counts.) I will say the 000, which did scratch the shine, had no impact whatsoever on the melt on. The melt on disintegrated the 000 into little steel wool dust bunnies.

(I imagine you could wipe your ass with the six zero stuff.)

It took me a long time to actually get to trying this, but to blaine, I say THANK YOU! The Easy Off worked like a charm. I sprayed it on, let it sit for about 5 hours, then wiped it right off, just like you said. Voila!

I guess, thinking about it, it makes sense. After all, that's what happened - something got "baked on" to the pipes. And just like that crud in the oven, it just came right off. To anyone else out there with the same issue, I highly recommend this method.
