Shell-Nitrogen Enriched Chevron-Techron for GZ250?
Hey everyone,
I was reading through the posts concerning 10 % ethanol in our gas, but what has everyone heard about this Nitrogen Enriched gas from Shell for our GZ's...the good the bad and the ugly? I've used Chevron 91-94 with Techron for awhile now, with no problems, I wonder if the GZ's engine would negatively be affected by this new gas additive. any thoughts? If Canada uses the same R+M/2 method that the US does, you are just wasting your money on high octane gas. Been discussed here several times and no need to re-hash that yet again. What, if anything leads you to believe there WOULD be any negative impact? I wonder if anything has really changed or if they are just talking-up something they have been doing all along. I haven't paid real close attention but do they really say NEW ?? Probably millions of compounds, natural and man made, have a signigicant portion of nitrogen atoms in there somewhere.......including basic gas itself. Wonder which one they are really talking about ???

Any major chain will provide good quality gas for the GZ. Don't worry about the advertising show. Use 87 octane, that is all that is required. The GZ was designed to operate almost anywhere in the world with little or no availability of high octane gas.

again i would say use JET FUEL and you will find yourself still on the road. i mean you cannot make this bike fly using higher octane levels and what the manual suggests should be ok.
occassionally i use the premium gas and carb cleaner just to clean the carb as some mechanics suggested to me and it costs me just a dollar or less. there could me many arguments on this but i just do it. i also get gas from any gas station that seems clean without any problem - mechanical, electrical or mental . love my GZ.

I live right across the street from a shell station. I can't say anything about the GZ, since I haven't had one since before Shell changed over to their new "Nitrogen" enriched gas, but I use it often in my scooter. If it claims to clean valves, I have to assume that it does.
At the end of the day, I still prefer the non-ethanol non-additive enriched fuel. You get better miles per gallon. That's been verified in all of my vehicles. Also, for the record, many Chevron station are claiming that they have ethanol free gas. This is false. Chevron does not make ethanol free gasoline. Check the official website. I have only found 1 gas station....1....where I can buy ethanol free gas and it's an independent Exxon station. There are 3 Chevron's here claiming to have ethanol free gasoline. Well, I don't know about the GZ but on my Cavalier i put that shell gas in and it gave me a check engine light that only went away when I filled up again at a Petro Canada, but I gotta wonder....isn't air mostly nitrogen anyways?

Wiz, try the Shell again as an experiment. I doubt it was the gas and might have been a temporary hiccup with the car. Or you might not have tightened the gas cap properly which will give you a check engine light. Any of the gas products, Shell, Chevron or petrocan should work well in the car. They are all top tier gas.

Re: Shell-Nitrogen Enriched Chevron-Techron for GZ250?
I grew up working at the family truck stops and this is my experience:
The gasoline at your local gas stations all came from the same refinery, regardless of brand. The companies have agreements with each other to share production. The ethanol and various proprietary chemicals are added at the storage areas. You can't do this anymore, but we had contracts with 6 companies so we could get the best price and avoid supply problems. All of it came from the same refinery. If you have problems with gas from a gas station, the problem most likely lies with the station, not the refinery. Gas station storage is where most problems with water, dirt, and other junk get into the mix. If you see a tanker filling a gas station's storage, go somewhere else. Any crud that was at the bottom of the storage tanks gets stirred about at that time and can get pumped out. I don't care for ethanol because I remember the days of it in the 80's when engines weren't designed to handle it. The alcohol would dissolve the rubber/plastic seals, fuel lines and fuel filters. Ethanol mix fuel also boils at a temperature about 10 degrees cooler than straight gasoline. This caused many problems with vapor lock in carbureted cars that you don't have with fuel injection. Ethanol mix fuels has a scouring effect on old, rusty gas tanks and clogged a lot of fuel system after the first fuelings. The Ethanol mixes also did not stay mixed. The Nebraska Dept. of Agriculture tested all of the Ethanol pumps in the state in the mid 80's. The alcohol percentage ranged from 2% to to 80% alcohol. Eh, I've rambled on enough. With Regards,
